The 95th Annual American Tennis Association Championships were held in Ft. Lauderdale, FL, July 29 - August 5, 2012. MID-TAC's President, Margaret Dorsey, attended while celebrating her 60th birthday. Really the President was there to represent our Section in the various trainings, meetings and summit that took place during the week long event. This year the schedule was heavy with business events, as well as social events for all of the players. MID-TAC's entire Board, Delegate and several Committee Chairpersons were in attendance with approximately 50 participants from the Midwest playing in the tournament.

Sunday was a training and Board Meeting for the ATA Executive Board and Section Delegates, along with the HBCU Showcase preparation by former ATA junior, Leslie Allen; Monday (Margaret's birthday) was the Jenkins Bar-B-Q later in the day after the matches that began at the Jimmy Everet Tennis Center in Holiday Park for juniors and The Tennis Club of Ft. Lauderdale for adults; Tuesday match play was continued at both sites with a Life Time Member Reception in the evening and the Jungle Queen Dinner Cruise for youth and adults; Wednesday play was definitely happening in all divisions with a great Pizza Party w/Game Room at the Convention Center for juniors in the evening and the ATA Annual Meeting at the host hotel before going to the Midtown Summerfest at Sistrunk Alley; Thursday semi-finals and finals were played at both sites with youth activities in the evening and Casino night for the adults; Friday morning and early afternoon play was possible before the thunderstorm which stopped play temporary at the adult site but ended play for the juniors - allowing a chance to get ready for the Junior and Adult parties with refreshments at the Bahi Mar; Saturday eveyone played at the adult site where the The State of Black Tennis Symposium & Television Tapping was held - later that evening the 2nd Annual Black Tennis Hall of Fame Induction Gala closed out the event for the week.

Some very significant contacts were made on behalf of MID-TAC with other Sections, as well as becoming a part of a new alliance between the ATA and the Professional Tennis Registry (PTR).

Emphasis was also placed on the new ATA Points-Per-Round Ranking System where all players in the 95th Annual will receive points for playing. The ranking year ends August 31st so we encourage you to play an ATA Sanctioned Tournament in your area to boost your points or even to just get in the standings for 2012. There is nothing more wonderful than being a part of the expansion and development of African American tennis around the country. MID-TAC is one of the outstanding Sections in the ATA with twelve (12) Section Clubs and we look forward to continuing the traditions set in place for us by the founders of the ATA.
